
A few weeks ago, we were all shocked at Argentina’s poor performance in the latest PISA education tests, which showed a sharp deterioration in all areas: reading comprehension, math skills and science. However, I dare say what happened at the lower house Chamber of Deputies last Wednesday during a joint committee meeting was even more disturbing. Insults, screaming, physical pushing, utter chaos. Deputies interrupting and threatening one another, a scandalous session where no-one listened and everyone shouted. Our so called representatives’ behaviour is shameful. Their inexcusable outbursts are disgraceful. While our students can eventually do better in the PISA exams if we do something about it, most of our current law-makers look and sound hopeless, past mending. Sigh …
