I happened to be in Pinamar 25 years ago in January 1997, spending my summer holidays. I was there the day José Luis Cabezas was murdered. A quarter of a century has gone by and today there’s no one in jail. Why was he killed? Because he took a photograph of Alfredo Yabrán, a powerful businessman with very close links with Menem’s administration. A big fish who always chose to remain in the shadow and whose face had never appeared publicly before.
For some reason, I link Cabezas’ assassination with a more recent one: Nisman’s. This federal prosecutor, who was about to testify against Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, was in charge of an investigation into the bombing of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (Amia) in Buenos Aires. Both Cabezas and Nisman were victims of “mafias” related to the power in office. Both clear evidence and blatant examples of a country lacking justice. And memory.
