In Argentina, we’re currently going through turbulent days, marked by verbal and physical violence, turbulence, uncertainty, distress. We are at a loss, disenchanted, disillusioned, orphans once again. There’s an antidote, though: Art. In all its forms and manifestations, art is a shelter, a refuge, a safe and cozy place, where we can find comfort, relief, some kind of peace. Last Saturday I went to the Teatro Argentino: Centro Provincial de las Artes in La Plata, my hometown, to see its ballet company. The programme included «The Four Seasons», by Antonio Vivaldi; ‘Adagietto,’ by Gustav Mahler; ‘Bolero,’ by Maurice Ravel. Listening to that marvelous live music and watching those talented young dancers had a healing effect on us – the audience – and provided a healthy and timely break. Both the company and the orchestra performed a dazzling show that made the night. “Man does not live on bread alone,” as the saying goes – and it’s true. We require spiritual nourishment, particularly in hard times. Art, literature, music, films, drama, help us survive, and do not disappoint us the way politicians do.
