I recently watched a very interesting Odisea Argentina interview in which Carlos Pagni talked with former Uruguayan president Julio María Sanguinetti. This bright politician, journalist, editor, columnist, lawyer and writer turned 90 years young on January 6. The Partido Colorado organised a pre-birth-day party and invited the current President Yamandú Orsi, former presidents Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera and Luis Lacalle Pou, and many other political leaders. I’ve always looked up to our neighbours. They are far more respectful, open-minded and tolerant than us. I remember Sanguinetti and José Mujica (Frente Amplio) hugging warmly in the Senate in 2020, in spite of their blatant ideological differences. Argentine politicians should learn from that example of civic conduct.
